I feel we are succumbing to something like "The Nothing" in The Never Ending Story. In the novel, The Nothing is revealed to be a mysterious and dark parasite, with the sole intention of running the magical universe into extinction. The power behind the Nothing seeks to destroy the current order and replace it with lies to manipulate and control the human race. The Nothing is also created by humans' lack of imagination and reluctance to understand. All those lost to The Nothing are reborn as lies. When the protagonist attempts to glance at The Nothing, his eyes hurt, simply because his brain was not able to comprehend what it is he saw.
